Congratulations at the German SME Summit / Key figures demonstrate the award winners’ innovative strength

They are the drivers of change: The TOP 100 companies of 2026 are distinguished by their impressive innovative strength. Christian Wulff will congratulate these innovative small and medium-sized enterprises on their success in the TOP 100 at the German SME Summit on June 26 in Heidelberg. For the former Federal President and Minister-President, this marks a first: He is participating in this round of the TOP 100 innovation competition as a mentor for the first time.

A total of 356 companies submitted their applications for the 33rd edition of the TOP 100. 282 SMEs passed the selection process and received the 2026 TOP 100 seal at the beginning of the year (a maximum of 100 per size category). Christian Wulff will now personally congratulate the award winners at the summit in the Heidelberg Congress Center. At the awards ceremony, he will highlight the great significance of the innovation work they have accomplished: “The innovations of the award-winning companies address key challenges of our time, such as the imperative of sustainability and resource conservation, the even more rapid pace of digitalization driven by AI, and the renewed awareness of the need for defense capabilities.”

To make it into the TOP 100, the honored companies had to demonstrate excellence in the five categories: Top Management Supporting Innovation, Innovation Climate, Innovation Processes and Organization, External Orientation / Open Innovation, and Innovation Success. The central question is whether the innovations are underpinned by structures that foster innovation and an innovative corporate culture (for more information on the evaluation criteria, visit www.top100.de/teilnahme/pruefkriterien/). To ensure that all applicants have an equal chance, the seal is awarded in three size categories based on the number of employees: up to 50 employees, 51 to 200 employees, and more than 200 employees. The selection
process was led by innovation researcher Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke of the Vienna University of Economics and Business. He is impressed by the award winners’ innovation management: “The TOP 100 companies create structures, processes, and leadership mechanisms that make innovation a logical consequence. They know how to translate customer focus into new ideas,” he says. “Above all, however, they foster a corporate culture in which change is seen not as a threat, but as the norm.” Various key metrics demonstrate the innovative strength of this year’s top innovators. Over the past three years, these companies have grown 18.5 percentage points faster than their respective industries. In addition, they generated a large share of their revenue—specifically, 36.4 percent—through innovations and innovative improvements. The implementation of employee ideas also contributed an average of 2.9 percent to revenue. The presence of 61 national and 18 global market leaders among the TOP 100 underscores the pioneering role that the award-winning companies play in Germany’s SME sector.
